年过半百的Jay刚娶了美娇妻Gloria。最近Jay发现要应付年轻性感的老婆以及精力过剩的青春期继子Manny，让他有点力不从心。主妇Claire持家有道，可也有自己的难题。她的丈夫Phil是个好老公，只不过三个孩子让他有些心力交瘁。还有Mitchel和他热情四射的同性伴侣Gameron，他们刚做出...了人生中的一个重大决定——另外一个名叫Lily的越南孤儿。 Phil（Ty Burrell）和Claire（Julie Bowen）已经结婚16年了，膝下有三个孩子：高中校花Haley（Sarah Hyland）、呆头呆脑的Luke（Nolan Gould）和过于早熟的Alex（Ariel Winter）。Claire因为自己年轻时也曾疯过野过，担心孩子们会步她性格叛逆的后尘，所以想当一个传统的好妈妈。Claire语：如果Haley不半裸着身子在佛罗里达海滩醒来，我这个当妈的就算尽职了。但Phil却对当一个“酷”爸爸更感兴趣。Phil吹牛语：我知道《歌舞青春 High School Musical》中所有的舞蹈。Luke不小心用玩具BB枪射中了Alex，但是Phil却放任自流，不执行“家规”。Claire则不管那一套：你要是再射到别人，对你的惩罚就是自己射自己。罚就是自己射自己。

Phil一直认为自己是非常民主的老爸，所以他对儿子Luke用BB枪打了女儿Alex并没给予处罚，而妻子Claire的意见则刚好相反。Jay对于年轻妻子Gloria和前夫所生的孩子Manny时不时地犯傻感到无可奈何。Mitchell向父亲Jay一家和妹妹Claire 一家宣告他和男友Cameron一起去越南领养了女孩Lily。
